Thanks for the reply. Again, I really enjoyed my visit. I took about 135 pictures or so. What I did forget to mention was I took a ride on the electric train which was the first for me. It was a different and enjoyable experience.

Hello!

Being a dedicated volunteer at the Illinois Railway Museum (who Googles our name everyday.haha), I thought I would respond to your post. I'm very happy you visted, although I'm so very sorry you were disappointed about more things not being open.

I empathize. It is unfortunate that not everything can be open for viewing after driving to the middle of nowhere (lol), but I hope my explanation will at least help a small bit.

The property is gigantic. That's actually a highlight, and an understatement. We are considered the LARGEST Railway Museum in the nation. That's pretty impressive. Very sadly, I sincerely regret to say, equipment has been vandalized in the past *sniff*, which is why we do not leave many of our valuable cars unlocked during the day. Just recently one of our cars was stripped of metal.

While we do have high security cameras set up in every single building, we want to remain safe. The equipment is invaluable; priceless.

Another reason why we leave some equipment locked is because it may look alright and newly painted on the outside, but the floor might be unstable, there may be jagged edges on seats, or we may be rehabbing the interior. We don't want anyone getting hurt.

We care about our visitors as well as our equipment and safety is our biggest priority.

What you can do, however, is plan your visit in advance. I know it's a hassle, but if we know you are coming and the equipment your are interested in viewing, special arrangements can be made.

I did not state anywhere that the Dole Mansion is owned by the park district. I am merely saying that the City of Crystal Lake could have used the money that was used for Vulcan Lakes for a better purpose by donating it to the Arts Legacy Park in the Dole Mansion.

This property is not owned by the CL Park District. The project is not funded by the CL Park District. It has nothing to do with the CL Park District. The site and the project are under the jurisdiction, funding, and oversight of the City of Crystal Lake. These are two different government entities.

Additionally, the Dole Mansion is not owned by the CL Park District. The ongoing restoration is not funded by the CL Park District. This historic site is owned and operated by a not-for-profit called Lakeside Legacy Foundation. You can find a link to them here: http://lakesidelegacy.org/
