DIY Groovmaster label protector tool for vinyl records

Recently I came across a whole bunch of old vinyl records (45’s & LP’s). By the way, vinyl is making a come back. Most of them are pretty dirty. Groovmaster makes a label saver that helps protect the label from getting wet while being washed. The cost is around $50 but you can make one for around $10.

Here’s what you need:

  • 2 outdoor plastic or metal outlet covers that are 4″ diameter with foam weather stripping
(At the time, I only found metal. It would be best to use plastic.)
  • 1 extra gasket for cover
  • 1 10-24 screw that is 2” long
  • 2 washers for 10-24 screw
  • 2 wing nuts 10-24
  • Tube Seal-All or Gorilla glue (Menards)
  • 3/16 drill bit
  • Countersink or 1/2 drill bit
  • Drill

  • Find the center of each cap and drill a 3/16 diameter hole. To remove the burrs around the holes, place a countersink or a 1/2 drill bit into the drill and apply light pressure just to knock off the burrs. If using plastic covers, this can be done by twisting a countersink or the 1/2 drill bit by hand.
  • Apply Seal-All to the gasket and center over cap.
  • I bought an extra gasket and cut a couple squares from it to put behind the wing nuts.

  • Flip cap over and apply weight for about 2 hour to ensure a good bond.

  • Assemble as shown.

Wait at least 24 hours before using in water to in sure that the Seal-All is fully cured.
